Wolfgang Zelmer was born in Munich in 1948. He studied painting and etching at the Hampstead School of Arts in London and the Academie Julien in Paris. Between 1972 and 1982 he traveled frequently, and for longer and longer periods of time, to Italy, where the style of the Old Masters became an increasingly important influence on his work.
Since 1978, Zelmer has had numerous exhibitions of his work in Berlin, Paris, New York, Nizza, Genf, Sydney, Tokyo, Zurich, Buenos Aires, Brussels and London. Since 1980, he has maintained a second studio in the historic “Villa Barca” in the Ligurian Mountains. In 2000, the artist moved to Ireland, where he still lives, though he remains artistically active in both Villa Barca and in Munich.
